What Do You Need to Know About Fleas?
Fleas are incredibly small insects that are notorious for their ability to jump extremely large distances. In fact, fleas can jump dozens of times higher than their own height, and dozens of times further than their entire body length as well. They also come in massive numbers, reproduce quickly, and are very itchy to any creature that they settle on. These sneaky pests will also lay their eggs in dark spaces, such as corners of rooms, cracks in floorboards, carpet, furniture, and inside walls while they wait for the perfect opportunity to jump on the next unsuspecting victim. Once they latch on, they are incredibly difficult to get rid of, particularly if they settle deep into hair and fur.
Many people think that a flea needs a host in order to survive, but this is not always the case; fleas can disturbingly live more than 100 days without a blood meal if they are not disturbed. Because female fleas lay an average of 50 eggs within 36-48 hours after a blood meal, flea colonies can spread incredibly quickly. That means getting pest control services is a time-sensitive matter.
What Do You Need to Know About Ticks?
Ticks are larger than fleas, and they can be just as harmful, if not more so. Ticks are burrowing bugs, and they are usually carried into homes and yards on dogs that have picked them up through close contact with an infested bush or lawn. The brown dog tick is the most common species to infest homes.
However, the real danger of ticks is one that is well-known: they are a huge carrier of potentially serious diseases, including tularemia, Lyme disease, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, to name a few. It is extremely important to get rid of these pests as soon as you notice a problem arise. At Preventive Pest Control, we offer services for the Lone Star tick, American dog tick, and Black-legged tick among several other species that are native to the Houston area and the Southern Plains.
