How Preventive Pest Control Contributed to Critical Rodent Research 

Starting in 2020, Preventive Pest Control supported a multi-year study evaluating whether wild rodents in North America could acquire or transmit SARS-CoV-2. Our role included collecting, preserving, and transporting rodent samples for Dr. Michael Parsons and research partners. The study, published in May 2024, formally acknowledges our involvement, highlighting how professional pest control teams contribute to public health research.

Key Findings from the SARS-CoV-2 Rodent Study

Researchers examined 248 wild rodents, including house mice, deer mice, brown rats, and black rats, across Texas, Washington, and British Columbia between July 2020 and June 2021.

 The study revealed insights that are directly relevant to homeowners and businesses managing rodent activity. The findings revealed: 

• Limited Antibody Presence: Some brown rats and house mice showed neutralizing antibodies, suggesting past exposure but no active infection.
• No Active SARS-CoV-2 Detected: Oronasal and fecal samples were negative, with only a single inconclusive fecal sample.

The study emphasized the importance of ongoing monitoring, showing that continued surveillance of rodent populations is vital for public health preparedness. It also reinforced the value of integrated rodent control, highlighting that preventive management strategies can reduce potential health risks in human environments.
