Rat Control in Houston

Signs of Rats in Your Houston Property

Effective rat control starts with identifying signs and likely travel routes. A single clue may not reveal the full extent of the problem, so note where each sign appears and whether you notice it during the day or at night.

Common signs of rat activity include:

• Droppings: Roof rat droppings tend to have pointed ends, while Norway rat droppings are larger and usually have blunt ends.
• Nighttime noises: Scratching or scurrying sounds may come from attics, wall spaces, storage areas, or other sheltered locations.
• Gnaw marks: Rats may chew stored materials and building components.
• Nesting materials: Shredded paper, insulation, and other soft materials may be gathered in protected areas.
• Grease marks: Dark smudges can develop along frequently used travel routes.
• Foul odors: Unusual odors are another sign to report during the inspection.

Upper & Lower Entry Patterns

Attic activity often points to upper access routes, including damaged roof vents, gaps around soffits, and utility penetrations. Strong climbers can use trees and structures to reach roofline entry points.

Evidence closer to the ground may appear near foundation openings, utility-entry areas, or burrows. Some rats favor lower openings and may establish activity at or below grade. These patterns can guide an inspection, but they don’t confirm a species or entry point before the property is assessed.

Rat Species Common Around Houston Properties

Houston properties may encounter two primary species: roof rats and Norway rats. Identifying the likely species can inform the control plan because each has a different build, climbing ability, and preferred activity area.

Roof rats
These rats have slender bodies, pointed noses, relatively large ears, and tails longer than their bodies. Around Houston, they frequently use attics, rooflines, trees, and other elevated travel routes.

Norway Rats
These rats are heavy-bodied, with blunt noses, small ears, and tails shorter than their bodies. Around Houston, their activity is often associated with industrial properties, commercial districts, lower openings, and burrows.
